As computers get more and more powerful, it will no longer be necessary to compress music into an MP3 format. If music "software" continues to be supplanted by a downloaded source, look for audio engineers to turn their efforts into offering higher resolution online. As an obsessive collector, I don't want to see the demise of the physical album (whatever the format), but, barring legal issues or new effective copy protection technology, I do see a day when it becomes obsolete. In fact I already see fewer and fewer music only retailers.
Obviously, if they could control the flow of content, the lables would love to do away with manufacturing, distribution, and retail, but right now they don't possess that control, and are thus screaming bloody murder about downloading.
As far as people being satisfied with shitty sound, remember in the 70s the brisk business in bootleg 8-tracks!
