Will hi-res die? Killed off by MP3?

Where's the future of audiophile media? WITHOUT WIDE POPULAR ACCEPTANCE NO MEDIUM WILL SURVIVE WITH ENOUGH CHOICE OF CONTENT TO BE RELEVANT. Audiophiles complain about the quality of CDs; vinyl, SACD, and DVD-A are just weird shit to most people. And I hear the vast majority are quite satisfied with MP3 quality -- what they usually download, say, 96kbps.

LP hasn't had choice-of-content for a long time now. Many audiophiles still prefer vinyl, but sane people -- and many audiophiles -- hate the ergonomics, so it just isn't going to make a come-back, (despite pretty good copy protection!).

The average person typically has never heard of SACD of DVD-A. Many audiophiles are very cynical about these media -- not that they agree on the reasons.

Any way, SACD looks doubtful. All mainstream manufactures other than Sony are opting for DVD-A or "universal" designs whose SACD performance is currently inferior according to most reviews. And Sony seems to be discontinuing dedicated audio players in favor of DVD combo machines. If Sony doesn't support SACD, who will?

Does that leave DVD-A? Most consumers are buying "home theatre in box" for which standard video DVD, (Dolby; DTS), is good enough. So, even if the equipment provides DVD-A as a "feature", how many music publishers will bother to provide the choice of quality content in that format??

Is even CD under threat? Remember: MP3 quality is good enough for most, and most would probably prefer to download even if they're forced to pay for it.

So whither audiophilia? Who can tell us?
