Good mono tapes, even from 1954, can have tremendous information...even if they don't have the frequency extremes of modern recording mediums. That information can "disappear" in the redbook consumer format. Less information disappears in the SACD consumer format -- on every SACD I've heard. If the mastering is bad, or even not so good, it the SACD can be made to sound unmusical, notwithstanding the additional information. But the best mastering for redbook consumer format cannot deliver the goods the way the best mastering for SACD can. I believe that master tapes from the 50s have more information than redbook can deliver.
