Many of my favorite classical recordings are rather old. Recordings from before ca 1950 usually contain lots of cracks and pops and hiss. But their musical value is fantastic. Especially old Wagner recordings with the fantastic singers of pre WW2. One favorite is the Parsifal recordings of Karl Muck made in 1927. A modern recording as Barenboim's sound *musically* without precision. My point is that when many of these "old" recordings were transferred to CD all the unwanted sounds from the old media are usually reproduced really hard and close to the listener. ("The Digital sound" (tm) ). SACD can do the reproduction of these sounds much better because of the higher resolution. I.e. they will not be as hard on the ear.
