Sarah Vaughan - 1954 mono recording on SACD non-hybrid

A couple of inmates were enthusiastic about this Verve disc a few days ago, and I picked it up on the weekend. But I only got around to it today, and what a sublime delight this is. A rich creamy sound, full of depth (mono depth?) and clarity. And such a very cool label reproducing the original EmArcy effort.

I'm not experienced with Sarah Vaughan recordings to know where critics say this one ranks in her extensive output. All I can say is that I found this SACD thrilling and a real pleasure. Hard to go wrong with Clifford Brown (trumpet), Herbie Mann (flute), Paul Quinichette (tenor), Jimmy Jones (piano), Roy Haynes (bass) and Joe Benjamin (drums). The alternative cut of "Lullaby in Birdland" seems to be taken just slightly slower.

Just a beautiful example of why we listen to SACD.

Regards,
Metralla
