Re: Questions.

Well, the cost of those discs is prohibitive--no doubt about it. The Sony JSACDs are gold discs like DCC's, which makes the cost a bit easier to rationalize to oneself. Unfortunately, I can't help out in finding a way to order these. I get mine through a friend in Nagoya, and it's tough to motivate him--he's very busy. if not for him, I really don't know how I'd order them.

Every JSACD i've obtained is an incredible recording, on par with those you mention--KoB, Ah Um, etc. The same studios and/or recording engineers and mic'ing techniques were used for many of these sessions with results sometimes surpassing even KoB, I'd say. For example, in track 2 of "Someday My Prince Will Come", just before Miles takes his solo, you can hear a chair creak--Miles played seated and as he leaned toward the mic, his chair made this sound, which you can hear plainly on the CD. However, on SACD it sounds uncanny. YOU ARE THERE. and you don't need a chair creak to convince you. The music is expertly recorded. I prefer these mic'ing techniques to those of Katz/Chesky on the NY Reunion session. I cannot think of any flaw, except perhaps for Porgy and Bess and Ellington Uptown, which may have been recorded a touch hot when the full orchestra was playing. but not hot enough to audibly distort. I highly recommend both sessions.

Round About Midnight and Ellington Uptown are mono.

If you like Miles Smiles, I highly recommend ESP and Nefertiti featuring the same lineup--one of my favorite bands of all time with Shorter, Hancock, Carter and Williams. I cannot say enough good things about the sound quality and dynamics of these JSACDs. i can talk about this all day--let me know if you need more specifics or a description of any session in particular.
