This is an interesting subject and can be explained simply, however a little question,,,do you remember the mats that we placed on CD's to improve the sound, well the same applies and will explain why.Anyone who has looked at CD/DVD mechanisms will understand the frailty of them in terms of not being stable enough for extracting the max from the disc - many Cd players were modified to improve the tracking either by adding stability mats or brute force engineering.
The techniques have not changed since the CD days and many of these can be applied as improvements to DVD mech's.The reason for the improvements is simple - if the tracking has less work to do, then there is an improvement in the power supplies ability to deliver when necessary - removing this stability margin degrades the tracking performance and therefor the overall picture and sound quality.
By placing a mat on top of the disc, the amount of disc slip is reduced, also the whole assembly is damped a little more than what normally be the case, end result, an improvement.
