I agree with you 100%. (That's a first!)
I run a web site that sells meditation music. In addition, I have been converting tapes (mostly cassette tapes) to digital so they can be issued as CDs and sold as downloads. I wrote the web site software for a download service after wondering why I was carrying boxes of CDs to Yoga Retreats and lugging most of them back home. It's been 18 months now since the service went on line. For the past six months the majority of our business has been downloads. Two factors have accelerated this: the pricing heavily favors downloads, and some titles are download only (some lower volume titles that we chose not to stamp or burn and some items that went out of stock). The operation is on a cooperative basis. The pricing accurately reflects the lower costs of doing business using Internet distribution.
We don't have any hi-res material. There aren't very many customers who are audiophiles. So far, only one of the musicians has discovered the availability of hi-res, but he is into expensive tube based microphones, so it is only a matter of time. (He has already asked me what DSD was...)
