"What I'm saying is that if Ayre had an equal amount to spend on a CD player and an SACD/DVD/CD player, the CD player would sound better playing CDs and I'm baffled why anyone would think differently."
While your conclusion may follow from a business model that focuses on production costs, once tooling and engineering costs are factored in it is quite possible that an integrated player can offer more value per dollar if fixed costs can be amortized over larger unit volume. I'm not sure whether this applies to universal players in general or to any particular price point or brand, but considerations such as these definitely apply in other industries. (The software industry is the most extreme example that comes to mind.)
