Actually, I believe the Series 3 with Digital transfer from 800 player to the 861 processor was released a month or so ago.It was demonstrated in beta mode for several months.
Meridian had to do a bit more than add playback - they also had to finish MHR (Meridian High Resolution) which allows for a secure transfer of the digital output throughout their digital system.
So, it's been a bit more effort than most to do the job.
