hi M,i will agree with you on that one. you can't improve on the resolution of the original. although, most recordings benefit from the mixing and mastering process even though it usually costs "some" resolution.
i have heard some analog mastering of digital recordings that sounded better than the digital mastered versions, but they usually involve other issues like higher resolution masters or just bad digital mastering jobs. but these cases are unusual. vinyl mastered from a 96khz or DSD source can easily sound better than a 16/44 version since vinyl has more resolution. but if you are talking a source and mastered product at the same resolution then the digital is usually equal or better than the vinyl. i must say i don't have much vinyl from a 16/44 source.
