Alex,As an owner of a Philips SACD 1000 sitting in limbo in the San Jose Philips office, many thanks for investigating this, and sharing your results.
The cold solder joint theory sounds like the best theory to me so far. The unit could have unsoldered or badly soldered joints that oxidize over time, worsening the physical interface. Heat could then cause temporary physical expansion that break contacts, and cause failure.
I guess the true test of this theory is to find more broken SACD 1000 machines, and apply the fix to see how successful it is. I would do it on my own unit if it wasn't sitting in San Jose. Physical inspection of the pins of the MACE processor under a stereoscope may also be illuminating.
