in addition.....

.....while i agree that my 2-channel room is not big enough for SOTA multi-channel......for 2-channel it actually works very well. even though i wish it was about 2 feet wider.....it still has outstanding performance. specifically with Classical orchestral music at full-tilt boggie level.....everything holds together, ambience is spookily good and there is no congestion whatsoever on peaks. i have tweaked my room a good deal to be able to control the energy that my system can project.

your Maggies do have different characteristics as far as listening distances with a good deal of vertical separation between the top and bottom of the soundwave it takes more space for things to come together.

my speakers are about 110% from my ears as the distance between the tweeters.....which is what i consider ideal. i like listening in the nearfield. my perception is that the details of the music do not dominate the musical whole.....it all feels natural and 'right'.

this may simply be a matter of preference. over my 9 years as an audiophile i've moved in a couple of feet from where i started relative to my speakers.....all in the same room. one interesting effect that i have observed is that some visitors are use to the visuals of the farfield, and can feel like the speakers are "right on top of them" visually. they want to sit back farther. then i hit my button to dim the lights and everything is perfect with them. it is the visual percetion that conflicts with their hearing. it does take awhile to be comfortable in the near field but once you do you become closer to the music.

my system easily picks up on the different ambient signatures of the halls and whether they are full or empty, assuming the engineer put that on the recording.....i too usually prefer live recordings with an audience.
