Re: Dems fightin' woids!

vinyl is not capable of ANY high quality of discrete multi-channel. but that doesn't mean that high quality discrete multi-channel can outperform vinyl. in fact, my opinion is that vinyl, at it's best, is better than discrete multi-channel at it's best (and it is pretty rare for discrete multi-channel to be done properly; whereas it is typical for vinyl to be optimized). i've been exposed to plenty of excellent multi-channel systems and software......none can quite get there yet to my ears.

we are talking about reproducing the event; which starts with the least veiled and most immediate (live) sound possible, micro-dynamics, then texture and tonal richness, and then a believable overall dynamic and pace.

if your only priority is a wrap-around soundstage.....then multi-channel has that......but the music lacks immediacy and is muted in comparison. tonal color and texture are subdued. and usually there are distractions from the event with the surround mix. entertaining but less satisfying.....still with less connection to the event.

please note that i like multi-channel sacd and dvd-a. and i look at vinyl and multi-channel discrete digital as two different formats that both have their place.

i can and do enjoy 12 hour vinyl listening sessions.....in my wildest dreams i can't imagine 12 hours of multi-channel.....i'd need a padded cell.

just my 2 cents.
