As re the digital DSD tranmission, there are TWO standards in play. The first is the hardware interface and base protocol - 1394 Firewire. The second, just as important, is the communication and encryption protocols OVER the 1394 interface specific to digital hirez.
This second component of digital hirez transmission is where the dCS gear veers substantially from the standard. Because the various committees were still hashing out the protocol when dCS was designing their gear, dCS had to come up with their own proprietary scheme. Just what is involved in bringing dCS's scheme into compliance with the recently adopted standard, I don't know. Hopefully, it is doable but I would think it would entail some very substantial redesign of the highly optimized dCS scheme.
By the way, did you see that MSB has just come out with a universal player that DOES implement the digital hirez standard over 1394? I give them a lot of credit taking a leap like this. They are betting a processor will be forthcoming from others that can make their player shine. In the interim, they have provided their box with everything needed to deliver SOTA hirez directly into either a preamp or directly into the amplifiers. Their unit therefore functions as a player into a preamp, a player/preamp combination and a digital transport. Wow! (8 grand worth of wow, BTW)
