I've been in much the same situation, finding alot of SACDs to be hit or miss (even when compared to CDs). Here's a few I've found to have excellent sonics. For older Jazz recordings you can't beat the Analogue Productions remasters of the OJC catalog. I have the following, all excellent:
Coltrane - Standard Coltrane
Vince Guaraldi - Jazz Impressions of Black Orpheus
Bill Evans - MoonbeamsChesky also seems to do a really good job with their SACDs, for me the standouts musically (and sonically) are
McCoy Tyner - NY Reunion (this is probably the most realistic recording I have heard regardless of format)
Bucky Pizzarelli - Swing LiveSome miscelaneous ones I've found to be excellent
Verve/UMG:
John Coltrane - Love Supreme (almost as good as the new Speakers Corner Vinyl reissue)
Stan Getz - Getz/Gilbretto (a reference disc for many people, those who listen say "ahhh")Sony/Columbia:
Dave Brubeck - Time Out (nice handling of an old classic)
Wynton Marsalis - Standard Time (this one kicks!)Audio Fidelity:
Cal Tjader - Latin + Jazz = Cal Tjader (get this one, its awesome!)These are the ones that come to mind, there are some others that are OK, but these are the cream of the crop from what I've heard so far...
Cheers,
Sebastian
