RE: Thank for the additional info!

SACD never exactly died...and Sony wasn't about to give up any information on it. They're still producing SACD discs...just in very small numbers. Much of the specification was published in the Scarlet Book; but that's vastly different from open sourcing the format. I don't know what the real story is with the DSD format itself...seeing as there's a lot of software that will work with it. I believe there may have been some intention of having DSD media files from the start since Sony's DSF files support meta-data; where as Philips DFF format is used in the authoring stage.

I haven't seen any open-source SACD authoring programs. I mean, I haven't really looked...but when I first dipped my toes in to this about 4 or 5 years ago....no, it was pretty much locked down and what we had was the result of what was published in scarlet book and some reverse engineering AFAIK.

What I do know is if I burn a SACD ISO to a DVD-R, my Sony players reject it. My old Oppo will play it back, because it's got the modified firmware. Since I have little interest in investing in any earlier generation players to find out...I'll never get a chance to try it unless I find someone with one.

I care about that a lot less now since I have a DAC that does DSD.

DST compression is floating around, though I'm not sure how it's been implemented. sacd_extract is able to decompress these, as well as the Foobar2000 SACD component. My Korg MR-1 obviously knows nothing about it, neither did that cheap chinese DSD player I briefly had. It was actually optional for stereo content but required for multi-channel; the transfer-rate limitation of the DVD medium prohibited 6 channels of uncompressed DSD from being transferred in realtime. On the stereo front, it just allowed you to either fit more music on a disc (probably rarely used); or cram the stereo mix on to a single layer with the 5.1 for a hybrid disc. If you weren't including a 5.1 mix, or had plenty of space on your layer; then you didn't have to use it.

I also don't know of a way, currently, to decode individual DST encoded DFF files back to DST without authoring them as a SACD image and decoding during extraction. But that's a situation I've only created myself and likely no one will ever have to deal with that. DSF does not support DST compression and that is the primary format of distribution for 99% of cases.
