That is not entirely true. My Sony NS-775 will play DVD-R content, but it does not play SACD-R.
The SACD player usually requires the pit modulation to be present to activate playback. The other forms of copy protection, like encryption and watermarking, are entirely optional. The pit modulation...that's required.
SACD-R playback required a firmware modification to disable the pit modulation check. It's my understanding Sony got very upset there were players capable of being modded for this and demanded manufacturers lock things down so it couldn't happen again.
There is an alternate format called "DSD Disc", which is a DVD-R burned with DSD content following a folder structure. It's possible it may support that.
