OK, that makes sense. The Soundstream must have been exactly like the 3M machine - no digital input or outputs available. As there was no standard for transmitting any digital audio signal (let alone a standardized sample rate and bit depth), both machines relied on internal custom-built A/D and D/A converters.
To the outside world, they worked exactly as analog tape machines did, with analog inputs and outputs *only*. This means that if an SACD was made that the original 50/16 digital signal on the tape went through an internal D/A converter and was output as an analog signal. To make an SACD would simply require a DSD A/D converter, exactly the same as if transferring an analog tape to SACD.
That is almost what happened with "The Nightfly" releases made on the 3M digital tape machine, but in that case the analog signal was apparently transferred to an analog tape machine in at least some of the many releases. The two examples of "The Nightfly" on MQA have differences (especially speed variations) that can only be explained by either one or both versions living on an analog tape machine at some point.
