Well, that's a bit of an oxymoron. SACD certainly **exists**,
and it's certainly a "niche format". Same with DVD-Audio.
Same, for that matter, with Laserdisc, as long as it existed.
Laserdisc only ceased to exist when it was superseded, both
technically and **vastly** in terms of popularity, by DVD --
which was itself a niche format for the first couple of
years of its existence (back when the movie studios were
waffling about whether to support it, and when DivX -- the
defunct pay-per-view format after which the modern
compression scheme was mockingly named -- was still being
pushed by Circuit City and journalists like Ken Pohlmann).
For that matter, the LP record, introduced by CBS in 1948,
remained largely a niche format for "high-fi bugs" throughout
much of the 50's, and the stereo LP was a niche format
into the early 60s. (The 45-RPM record, introduced by
rival RCA at the same time as the LP, was the 78 replacement
"for the rest of us". And that found its own "niche" --
among the kids who shopped for singles at the dime
store rather than the well-heeled record buyers who
shopped at Sam Goody's.)
