Your problems are, of course, insuperable. As rational beings we have an intellectual responsibility to draw inferences from the empirical data presented. It's one of the things that separates us from the lower animals. If I see numerous "golden ear" audio gurus refusing to take the Pepsi challenge, year after year, on audio equipment as diverse as SACD players, cables, cartridges etc., I can reasonably infer that this crowd is ducking the challenge out of fear of being found out. After all, alpha males love to show off. :)The definition of a charlatan is one who falsely claims knowledge or ability.
Conversely, if I notice various folks stepping up to the plate and demonstrating they know of what they speak by correctly identifying their favorite whatever, without the luxury of knowing they're actually listening to it; then I'm forced to conclude that the differences they speak of are real rather than illusory.
There is far too much group think in the audio industry. Manufacturers and magazines have a vested interest, largely financial, in preying on their neurotic customers by making them believe that every new product is the latest and greatest. I should think this obvious. It's entirely plausible that the sweetest sounding tube amp ever manufactured was built 10-15 years ago and is now discontinued. But don't look for any manufacturer or magazine to claim that. :)
