Re: A candid exchange with John Atkinson:

For me the medium can be more critical than the type of recording. To summarize, I have some SACDs that sound better (in 2CH) than any CDs or LPs, I have many LPs that sound better than many SACDs or CDs, but not all, I have some CDs that sound better than many LPs, and I have many CDs that sound comparable to SACDs. Whew! That's sort like the start of an SAT question. So for me, the best SACDs (roughly 10%) have better sound than anything else I have heard. As a medium, I think it clearly is superior to the CD. I consider a number of my CDs virtually unlistenable because of their high brightness and thin sound, but very few of my SACDs share this trait. Incidentally, my CD player is an Ayre CX-7 and my SACD player is a cheapie SONY, so surely I have understated the case for SACD.

As an early adopter decades ago of a time delay unit (the Advent), I have been a long believer in the ambience addition that MCH can add. For me, as a primarily classical music listener, MCH SACD represents a major step forward. At times I find it is so good that it is almost scary- my living room, in fact my house seems to disappear.
