Re: There is a way to tell the difference: multichannel

Well said, BobH.

Multichannel is easily audible and is often a major improvement. Hi-res is a bonus, the value of which is less clear. In stereo, I think I hear modest improvements on many SACDs, but my comparisons are not well controlled. I could be fooled about this.

But I don't buy the conspiracy theory. Why shouldn't the record companies try to sell us music (new and old) in an improved format? Well mixed multichannel is certainly an improvement.

I also agree that upgrading a stereo system to multichannel is expensive. Many may not want to risk the change on a format with poor software selection and less than 50-50 survival odds. I'm staying with stereo until SACD or DVD-A does better in the market.
