The internal circuit of an SPXO such as the DSO751S oscillator in the Sony SCD-1, and other none Surface Mount SPXO types is basic oscillator configuration of quartz crystal and TTL gates. The fact that this is a SPXO is not the reason why it offers poor performance when compared to correctly design discrete oscillator circuits, it is its internal circuit configuration of quartz crystal & TTL gates which are the limiting factor.‘Dressing up’ a circuit using the DSO751S oscillator, and other none Surface Mount SPXO types with a better power supply will give improved results, but this does not overcome the flaws with the oscillator circuit itself or other design issues as mentioned in the previous post.
For the Sony SCD-1 KDS (DSO751S) oscillator we made several tests on improving the power supply to the original clock before experimenting with other clock designs. Whilst improved power supplies to the KDS oscillator gave better performance, with a reference design oscillator circuit the improvements went from merely better to dramatic.
We encourage you to keep tweaking!
