It’s true that the simple gate oscillators used in most SACD and CD players are very inexpensive. However, Sony spent dollars rather than pennies on the SCD-1/777ES. The KDS oscillator is not a cheap part and Sony spent the money to design their own DAC chip set containing the buffer for the oscillator. They also provided a dedicated power supply – although not a very good one.Looking at the original Superclock, most of the parts cost appears to be in the board and the power supplies. And Audiocom is selling the clock for several times parts cost just like any other manufacturer that wants to stay in business.
Add-in clocks are the only way to go for just about every player on the market. However, the SCD-1/777ES has a clock that is a cut above others I’ve seen – and it can be improved in situ with a very pleasing result. And I have no doubt that replacing the stock clock with an add-in clock can also produce an excellent result.
