IC304. Rather than fit a largish regulator, why not try the LT1761 in a surface mount package, although the pins are different. You can order on the web at a price which is just over $1. The noise is very low.I have now learnt from experimentation that it is not just the regulator, but the decoupling cap which is equally important. 100-150 uf OSCON SG 'kills' most of the in situ noise. Don't just read the static spec.
