Actually the Audiocom mod only replaces the 5V regulator feeding the S-TACT chip. The more important 5V regulator feeding the oscillator/buffer is a tiny surface-mount component on the underside of the board. Yours is still there powering the buffer in the S-TACT chip (which is fed from both power supplies).

The big disadvantage of an add-in clock is that it can’t be surface mounted right next to the DAC. Physical layout is very important in high speed digital circuits. A second problem with add-in clocks is getting them mounted securely. Since the crystals are sensitive to vibration – and even to orientation – mounting matters. Otherwise, a well designed add-in clock can be fine. And add-in clocks are the only choice all just about all SACD players except the SCD-1/777ES. Sony got this particular clock implementation almost right.
