Great minds think alike. Excellent post and logic.I have just ordered the LT 1761 to 1764 series of low noise regulators, some SOT and some TO220 with outputs between 100 mA to 1.5A and 20 to 40 uV noise for the same purpose. I shall compare these to the Audiocom Super Regulator before fitting (noise spec less than 1 mV ?). The LTs are more than 10 times cheaper than the Audiocoms!
The reason for this step is that I have been comparing the effects of clock ps in a Sony SCDXB940. The move was motivated by my findings in fitting a Tent Clock with a VSE ps to a SCD777ES for someone. The change didn't make a great deal of difference. This prompted me to fit the KDS chip to the XB940 with a TL431 shunted series pass ps and experimenting with decoupling arrangements for lowest noise (about 50 uV as opposed to 150 uV wideband previuosly). This time there was an enormous difference with the player being much more refined.
The only thing which appears to be 'inferior' in the KDS chip is symmetry. I have therefore ordered Euroquartz 25 ppm XOs with better symmetry and the Tent XO for trial. Tent also makes an XO3 board with a ps and a relock facility which I shall also try.
I hope that this will make the same differnce that James is talking about. The other mod I shall try later is to replace the LM6172s in the gyrators for the output filter. I suspect that these may be partly responsible for the large difference in sonics between the Custom and Standard settings of the filter. AD826s come to mind as being much 'calmer' opamps.
