At the recent LA audio show I found there was quite a wide range of 'tastes' apparent in high-end headphones. (I'd come prepared to buy, but decided to stick with my trusty ol' Senn 650's).
The 1/2-dozen high end phones I listened to carefully were all possessed of tremendous sound - crisp dynamics, wide range, etc. - so maybe it's arising from something as fundamental as frequency response differences as the different manufacturers seek the "right" in ear response? Also, the way equalization is applied by DSP's is somewhat suspect, in this Bear's opinion, but it sounds as if you've had a positive experience.
