RE: I going to make a bold statement

;)

Yes, as we gain more and more critical listening experience over time, whether as a musician, sound engineer or avid audience member, we sharpen our ability to hear smaller and smaller differences, and remember them for a longer time.

Also, in certain situations, we can learn some differences very quickly, and hear them if presented with two very similar but different stimuli within that 5 to 10 second window. This depends a lot on knowing what difference we're listening for . A good example is the series of audio clips which mastering engineer Bob Ludwig played at the 2014 AES convention in Los Angeles. It was regarding a type of digital distortion. The first clip had the distortion, but most people didn't hear it. Then, he played a clip where the distortion was obvious to even a casual listener. After we all knew what we were listening for , he played clips with successively less and less of the distortion, to where, after this learninng experience, most of the audience could hear it at the level of the original clip! Bob conditioned us to "look for" a specific difference, and ultimately, we could.

But this is a somewhat different scenario than swapping a cable or a wallwart, where people typically expect to hear a difference, and therefore, even after several minutes of fiddling, often "do".
