Using a 2 channel CD with synthesized surround sound is interesting, but I never cared for it. My processor will do many effects like various night club or other venues and it's interesting, but I always go back to 2 channel.
OTOH, for movies or DVDs, surround is a must. But these are discrete sources and the mix is key to its effects. NetFlix has a documentary about ZZ Top that I watched recently. The concert cuts were great along with their MTV videos. The surround just filled the room with music.
