Certainly if one prefers to "own" (or at least have in house) the content to which one listens, an old lappie and a NAS and even a halfway decent DAC will give a pretty good simulation of a server without fear of having to listen to any new to you music! ;)
The NAS comes in handy for lots of other things, too -- especially if one is (as I am, truth be told), ahem , "cloud averse" :)
NAS (this is a very basic, and older one, kindly passed along to me by one of the local vacuum tube gurus) - the sky's the limit in terms of capacity & capability (and price). We've since added another, somewhat faster and more capacious NAS to the home network.
Ancient lappie (I put Linux Mint on this one and use it to access the NAS and to rip CDs to it, as well).
USB DAC (this Topping, e.g., is a cheap but very decent one which I acquired as a "karma" giveaway from one of the fine folks at the Polk Audio forums)
voila! :)
all the best,
mrh
