Pacific Audio Fest -- Best of Show

The Von Schweikert system was truly impressive, perhaps not for its sound, but surely for its insanely high cost possibly exceeding the million dollar mark!

The Ultra 7 speakers retail at $180K and the VAC amps come in at $150K/pair or $300K for the bi-amped set for a total of $480K and we haven't looked at the rack.

Here's a close up of the VAC amps:

I don't have a break down of the components on the rack. Typical VAC gear run around $80K for a preamp or phono preamp. Of course, you also have a DAC, another tube piece, cabling and the rack itself.

The Kronos Pro is beautiful as any $42K turntable should. Add a cartridge and its anyone's guess.

The Von Schweikert Ultra 7 speakers are gorgeous in a pedestrian way, and the sound was impressive; however, the cost to get there is excessive and while it's a contender, it's not the winner.

I also wondered how much all these speaker cable might cost to hook up those speakers, likely more than my two systems. ;)

Drum roll....meet the Acapella Apollon speakers and our small group consensus winner. Yes, its another $180K speaker and stands an impressive 7'7" tall and weighs 700 pounds. You'll need 12 foot ceilings to give them breathing room as well.

The Apollon uses a hyperspherical midrange horn and an ion plasma tweeter. Bass is accomplished with six 10" woofers, two that are mounted isobarically. One sealed bass cabinet is mounted on the top and another at the base.

The sound was big, smooth, warm and natural. I'm sorry that I didn't get more pics of the accompanied gear or have gotten a better pic. The lighting was difficult. According to the price sheet from Audio Federation, you could have bought the show system for under a half million less cables.

And last, but not least, Jeff Joseph's Pearl Graphene speakers take the prize for the second best overall at a reasonable cost of only $35K, chump change in these audiophile circles.
