I wasn't a Deadhead but saw Grateful Dead twice at Shoreline Amphitheater in the 1990's. And you're right about MTV. It was new and fun until they went too much rap for me then reality TV. I enjoyed the earlier MTV (and some VH-1) as they helped usher in 80's New Wave as did radio station KROQ in SoCal.
It's been so long but I recall that 99 was a little slower route with more dust as we traveled through agricultural communities. I rarely took 99. I would take 85 from Mountain View to 101 down to the Gilroy area then make the decision whether to stay on 101 South or cut East on 152 to pickup I-5. I had a black Camry SE V6 and I would usually travel late Friday night after work to avoid heavy traffic. My family were all in Torrance and further south in OC.I had the Adcom GCD-700 that I loaded up with MTV Unplugged CDs and put on random play. I eventually got an outboard DAC for it but it wasn't the GDA-600 or GDA-700. I recall now that I also had the GTP-600 processor when I started experimenting with 5.1 surround. Add the GFP-750 preamp much later.
