My new Exposure power amp went ptoof a short period after purchase. It had to go back to the UK for repairs. Yuck. So I a bought an Onkyo receiver, for my teen son from a different dealer to tied me over until my amp got back. How boring and uninteresting after week I gave it to my son and asked the dealer who sold me the amp for a loaner - he gave me the TOL Adcom amp of that time (mid/late 90s). It was ok.My son kept the Onkyo for several years and now has a nice audiophile quality system.
It wasn't unusual for me to see Onkyo in high fi shops as an entry level line. I think Esoteric brand was a part of Onkyo.
