RE: Something like the LM138 / LM338 might be a good choice....

Thanks Abe, I forgot to mention that, if he does decide to use 7805, it is nice that the package is ground potential so just screw it the chassis, no need for insulation. LM138/LM338 is a good choice if you have high current demands, I use 7805's basically because I have them and they do really well for RPIs because at that current is when they are the least noisy.
