Why hyped? They were built for low mass, high compliance MM cartridges with which they worked well. However within a year or two of the their appearance audio fashion changed and more massive, medium or low compliance MC cartridges became the popular choice. Of course those arms did not work well with the latter but they were never intended to. If you did use them with a medium or low compliance cartridge model then you could have been disappointed.
So SME then retired the SME III and introduced a range of arms more suited to those medium mass/compliance cartridges. ADC simply pulled out.
