" I listen to classical and opera exclusively and I've not had the best of luck with ripping and meta data (multi disc opera sets especially)so I gave up on that after a hundred discs or so. And an issue I have that is probably fixable is that opera especially does not transition from track to track smoothly, a teeny lag. Probably in the way I did something when I ripped them, but it's really annoying."
I have similar tastes and came to the same conclusion. Most of my collection is now stored on a server but not operas or other box sets. With opera I need to see the libretto and many box sets come with a book. Yes I could turn them into .pdfs but the effort required is considerable and the pricing of Adobe seems to assume that I am a small company. I also agree with your point about ripping SACDs. So I keep a silver disc spinner.
If you have ripped discs and find a lag between track transitions on replay it sounds like you are using a method without gapless replay. If your operas are stored, for example, on NAS serving the files via DNLA then this is possible and the subject may be worth exploring further.
