I've got 7.2 and a 4.2 system and both are great for HT. The 4.2 is better for waking you up by rumbling me off the couch due to impressive subs.
Atmos is about speakers. Maybe a TV can fake it well with a surrounds and a sub, but it isn't like a great stereo. While I suspect it's fantastic with a real remaster, it's more of a venue and vibe of an event and the sweet spot gets tighter with 12 speakers in the right distance from your seat. If done well and you can sit still, but I'm a wanderer and surround sounds weird under the right surround, not like a 'band in the room'.
OTOH, it is an improvement as the old 7.2 systems and more were processed because real tracks was just 5.1 on the DVD.
