RE: It certainly is underused...

Because puerile comes from the Latin word "puer" which means "boy." The word for "girl" in Latin is "puella." A good nonspecific word would be juvenile but you're right -- "girlish" doesn't have the same connotation.

Knew those four years of high school Latin would come in handy one day. :)
