It's to do with the way we build meaning. Moving pictures can communicate *huge* amounts of meaning from a single still. Not only that, but they activate schema (memory, cultural significance, historical significance, personal opinion, etc), allow the viewer to infer affect and emotion, maybe even describe a previous moment and anticipate the next.If you know the film, you could tell us - from one still - what the whole story was about, at what point in the story we are and how this film fits into a larger scheme of films, like a series. And you could garner 99.99% of all the meaning from this still whether it was a still from a crappy TV broadcast from the 80s, or if it was a sumptuously produced cinema print projected in a cinema on a 40' screen. It would make nearly no difference to the meaning you obtain, even if you enjoy the film print more, technically.
The audio equivalent - taking a chord from a moment in music and holding it for the same amount of time as we would take to view a still makes that near impossible. Not only would we struggle to identify the music, even if it was well known, we couldn't tell you at what point in the song we were.
What's worse, holding a chord from a moment in one song literally CHANGES the message - the sustained moment itself becomes a new song, a new piece of music, due to the limitations of how we perceive sound and construct meaning from it past perceptual information.
The written equivalent is just as limited. If a picture is the equivalent a thousand words, the still from a film would still communicate whole galaxies of information to you in a way that a single word from the thousand word description cannot.
There's no comparison. Which is why audio costs so much more to 'get right' and communicate the artist's intent.
