In the sixties, Leonard Bernstein performed a highly acclaimed series of "young people's concerts" with a full classical orchestra, music interspersed with discussion about the music.
In the very first concert, he discussed some basic concepts of music. One question - maybe it was the very first question he tried to answer - was "What does music mean"?
His answer was: "nothing, it is simply enjoyable".
For the two or three mastering engineers in the world committed and dedicated to perfectly, faithfully ,and accurately (flaws and all) recording the exact soundwaves in an environment with no modification - who I assume would be cultural anthropologists attempting to document original instruments and sounds for posterity - good for them!.
For the rest or us, I think it is all about musical enjoyment.
