RE: They were pointed toward The Green Door many times

I live in Nanaimo and I am considering - I can't believe it - retiring in the Niagara region (St. Catherine's, Welland, Niagara Falls)of The Golden Horseshoe. But Ontario isn't filling me with confidence WHEN another Covid comes around in the future.

As much as I like BC - Niagara has a train to downtown Toronto where I can watch the Jays or the Leafs (if I can afford the Leafs!?!) and the big casinos for my mom (who is kidding who - me too). But the Snow!!

US politics is what it is. They fixed their 4-year mistake. Still, their elections have a big impact on the world so seeing 70 million people vote for crazy after seeing his non-results isn't exactly inspiring.

Listening to the people who actually attend those rallies makes me wonder what kind of agent orange their parents were drinking during pregnancy.

A note I made on another thread: College-educated or a university degree doesn't really mean that they were "educated."

It depends on the courses the people took. You can get a degree in business or engineering and never take courses beyond the tunnel focus of the field. Everyone has to take electives but the electives can be very closely tied to the chosen field. So a business student can choose math electives or compositional writing (how to write an effective email).

Engineering (the Oompa Loompa of science).

These "get a job" fields are glorified burger-flipping courses that largely contain no need for original thought.

I took business for 2 years. Accounting - learn to put debits on the left and credits on the right and make sure to put "For the Year Ended Dec 31" instead of just "December 31" Mind-numbing memorization dross. You might take a course on Business Ethics and Business Law but other than a couple of courses there was little thinking required.

The "education" comes from courses such as Sociology, Criminology, Psychology, History, English Literature, Philosophy, Education, Liberal Studies, etc.

The courses that "don't get you a job" but improve thinking skills and logic challenge people's preconceived beliefs and are not about memorizing facts for a test.

Example: Philosophy - Contemporary Moral Problems. Choose a topic (abortion, euthanasia, capital punishment, etc.) Write a 1 paragraph essay proposal arguing your stance on one of these issues.

Submit proposal. So I was arguing for pro-choice or against the death penalty. Being a "liberal" that's generally the side of a liberal. The class had conservatives - some from religious backgrounds to they were for Pro-life or against euthanasia.

The professor returns the proposals - we have to write an essay for the opposite side stated in our proposal - so I had to write my essay arguing for pro-life, for capital punishment, etc. The religious students had to write a paper advocating pro-choice. Many dropped the course! They don't want to be confronted with ideas beyond their preconceived world view.

Many University and College courses have no confrontation just memorize the graphs in economics or engineering or business classes. Like I say I took both areas. I worked in Accounting for 8 years. and took night classes after work 3 hours a night 4 days a week. 8am to 4pm working and 7pm to 10pm taking courses for a business degree. Eesh. And working McDonald's Saturdays. What the hell energy drink was I sucking down back then? And the worst part is - The job was so boring and so were the courses. My boss had no personality - no wonder - who the hell would have the time for one.
