FWIW - I was banned from two forums

I was banned from Audio Shark.

I posted the AudioShowrooms 10 part factory tour of Audio Note. Having just made a purchase recently I liked it and knew there were some tube fans on the forum.

Conversations were going okay - but I made an off-hand remark that Peter Qvortrup buys some expensive competition to test and noted that Fred Crowder on our staff did a factory tour and that one of the photos had an Avante-Garde Acoustic Uno or Duo speaker in the closet where they kept bicycles.

A poster who is the site owner (I did not know this) blasted me for being a liar etc. So I posted Fred's picture - I never said anything bad about the speaker - I don't particularly care for them but AN must have thought enough of them to bring them in!

Anyway, the owner, Mike Bovaird sends me a foul-mouthed PM that how dare I say anything negative about AG speakers because he carries them in his store. Turns out Audio Shark is a glorified propaganda piece so that he can shill products not stop for his Florida dealership "Suncoast Audio." I had no idea that the forum was a mouthpiece for his store.

Here's the problem with the internet. We live in a world where people tend to have a short fuse and this guy is swearing at me bans me - then goes into the thread and craps on AN and AVshowrooms or whatever.

The thing is people, myself included, should try to think if they would say what they say on a forum to someone's face. There are people out there who are just a little "off." I just watched that movie "Falling Down" with Michael Douglas (yes late to it) and he goes irate when the breakfast menu shifts from breakfast to lunch.

On internet forums, you really don't know who is all that stable. I have been threatened a few times and I am easy to find. But even some of the posters here who use fake handles make themselves easy to find because of the information they provide about themselves - who their friends are or what car or speakers they buy or who their wife is etc.

So when a poster says his close friend is X musician - well that musician can be tracked down. I am friends with X speaker manufacturer then people can pay that musician or speaker manufacturer a little visit. Now, will that musician or manufacturer risk their life or their wife's life or their children's life to not give up a forum poster? I watch detective shows and Dexter so it's not difficult to find people. Assuming the website can't be hacked!

I say the above because I have had a few threats over the years. Audio rage - like road rage - even normal people can "snap."

I always tell my 83-year-old mom not to get angry with strangers. Someone gets on the bus with no mask and she will tell them off. "Mon you're 83 and 4'11 and if these are the kinds of humans who don't wear a mask to protect their own mothers and grandmother's they're probably the "element" who will have no problem punching you".

The other ban was a constant troll who was trolling me and others for months and months and so I PM'd the troll a rather colourful insult (no swearing mind you) and no threat. He cried to the moderators. This was a poster who only ever made snide comments - I did a search and could see all the comments he had made over the previous year. No advice offered to help other posters - it was all wall to wall insults and flip remarks and digs at everyone. So Canuck Audio Mart elected to side with the troll. So it goes. I thought Canadians - hockey country after all - weren't snowflakes but Canuck Audio Mart is run by them I am sorry to say.

Generally, AA is more sensible - they know people get hot-headed or have a bad day so they ban you for a week or they just delete your posts. And so long as they delete posts from both sides - and they do - then you generally accept the terms.

Over on the Steve Hoffman forum, someone was always pissed at me so I flat out said - just put me on your ignore list. He did and he is happy to not see my posts and thus we never get into arguments.

This would not be a bad idea for all such forums. As you say - sometimes we can't help ourselves to open a post from someone we know is going to aggravate us. Like roadkill, you can't help but look. The ignore feature on the SF forum solves this.
