You need to measure the correct things and frequency response is a minor one. A friend of mine chose a Technics pickup, not knowing what it was from a square wave, a separation curve(and a frequency curve) and he got what he expected. We need to find more areas to graph or measure and maybe then they will give us real info. But no one seems to be exploring other data. Audio gear are mechanical/electrical devices. They take an input and produce an output. Changes are measurable if we learn where to look. And no, except for a few exceptions I don't expect a full solution in my audio lifetime.
