Just a couple of high school friends

1986. What an innocent time. We were still split along gender lines, so most of my friends were guys. A friend lived out near 46th and Judah, by the end of the MUNI Metro line. His mom and stepdad were true (as opposed to the wannabes when I went to college) hippies. Both were genuinely nice. When I met the stepdad, I thought he was the second coming of ABBA's Benny Andersson! But anyway, they had some small Ohm Walsh floorstanding speakers. The stepdad knew that we wanted to listen to music. He apologized that the couch along the side wall was impeding the speaker.

I don't recall the amplification, but I do remember the NAD tape deck. And of course, a radio station played Simon & Garfunkel's "The Sound Of Silence."

In early 1987, another friend lived on 20-something and Lincoln, in a detached cottage-like house. I mean, damn; San Francisco real estate was always expensive, but this house was, in 1987, over a million dollars. They also had Ohm Walsh speakers. I *think* the electronics were Carver, but they had just added a CD player (not Carver). It was early evening, and we were digging Peter Gabriel's "Red Rain."

The older sister, Yulie, who had just come home from SF State, dozed off on the couch. It wasn't red rain, but she started drooling! You never forget these things. But these were the only two times I recall hearing any Ohm products. I still have the August 1987 Stereophile, in which a SoCal dealer was offering in-home trials for Ohm Walsh speakers.
