...the latest XLO Reference Type 5 post, for more details.

When I got the phone call that the Thiel CS.5 had arrived at the store, ACS drove in her little red Toyota Tercel. She then helped me carry the two boxes up the stairs to my parents' place. She helped me take down the Signet SL-280B/U and Target stands. She then vacuumed. She helped unbox the CS.5. She tipped them back, while I hooked up the spade-equipped Kimber 4TC, whose personality wasn't a good match for the CS.5.

One of the first songs we played was Tears For Fears' "God's Mistake," which we had used at stores, to audition products. While I sat on the couch, listening, ACS would reposition the speakers.

Talk about privileged, ACS had a conference in London, England. To prepare, she had to get her shots updated, which they did via her employment at Genentech.

When ACS came home, we bought the XLO Ultra 12, which, once again, she helped connect to the CS.5.

I had been with KJ much longer than the two years I was with ACS. So, over that time, KJ provided even more audio help. She helped me bring home the Adcom GTP-400, Classe CP-60, Mark Levinson No. 380, Rega Planar 3, Theta DS Pro Basic IIIa and Jade, Thiel CS1.5, and myriad cables and accessories.

KJ, bless her soul, helped assemble the RoomTunes Deluxe JustaRacks. Yes, that meant spinning and spinning and spinning the nuts up and down the rods. Yes, she got her hands all greasy and dirty. Yes, that meant holding the rods and shelves, while I then spun the nuts.

Yes, KJ helped me hook up and then reposition the Thiel CS1.5.

Both ACS and KJ were/are critical. ACS has a gift of gab, and fires off quips at a mile a minute. KJ is more bombastic. Either way, the flaws in audio products have nowhere to hide. When ACS and KJ do NOT comment on the sound, that can be a good thing. When ACS bops to Mark Morrison's "Return Of The Mack," and gabs about non-audio topics, you know the system is getting out of the way, and letting the music speak for itself.

KJ has zero tolerance, for a system not getting Vinnie Moore's "April Sky," which is an electric guitar transcription of Bach's "Air on a G String," right. This is a song, to which KJ likes to sing/hum. In high school, KJ played violin. If a stereo gets "April Sky" right, KJ will then look into using other instruments (such as her kids' keyboard, clarinet, or ukulele), to perform it.
