Yup

In 1996, my head wasn't on straight. My then-girlfriend ACS and I spent a lot of time, shopping for speakers. I loved the precision, resolution, and low-profile of the small Thiel models. Moreover, Thiels face forward, withOUT any toe-in. ACS liked Sonus Faber Concertino + Stand Fixed, which cost the same as Thiel's CS.5. Admittedly, we both liked the Martin-Logan Aerius i even better, but that cost significantly more.

I did buy the Thiel CS.5, and its warmish balance was a poor match for my crowded 15x15 room, plus fat-sounding Classe' CA-100.

In 1997, now dating KJ, I traded in the CS.5 for the CS1.5. Yes, the CS1.5 had a flatter tonal balance, with excellent treble extension. Yes, the CS1.5 was faster, more detailed and focused. However, the deeper bass drowned us out. With Kenny Loggins' "For The First Time," the excess bass caused me infamously to do a backstroke up the couch.

What they didn't tell you was that, in order for the time-aligned nature of the Thiels to work, you need to sit from afar. And in a crowded 15x15 room, there is no such distance. They also didn't tell you that the CS.5 and CS1.5 are stand-mounted models. Sound Anchors made custom 12" stands for these two. These stands go a long way in correcting the bass problems, and turning your entire room into the recording studio or concert hall. Cool.

This isn't a knock against Thiel; rather, you have to be an educated shopper. You have to understand what type of room you have. And if you don't have a long room, Thiels won't work as designed. I now have a 19x15 room, which is open on one side, and does not have the stone walls of my parents' place. In my current room, as long as you sit/stand at the back of the room, Thiel's CS1.5 and CS2.4 shine.
