I found the sound quality this year superior to what we normally get. However as there was no audience I wonder if the sound engineers were able to have run throughs first to find a balance? that won't work normally as the acoustics change when there is an audience in place.

Of course in normal years they have to work whilst the concert is transmitted. Imagine having to decide the balance on the fly for an 80 piece orchestra, 100 voice chorus and four soloists? To make it worse the main microphone layouts and positions are decided and installed before the concert season even begins as they are flown from the dome so as to maintain sight lines. Overall they do magnificently. However now and again you may find that the balance engineer realises that a wrong microphone set has been chosen from their experience before the start of the concert and that it is necessary to make a change. So a switch to a different set may be during the short interval between pieces while the stage is reset. Incidentally although one or two of the boxes in the R.A.H are occupied by BBC Radio 3 or BBC TV I believe that the engineers are working from an OB truck parked outside the hall. At least I always see the OB truck when I attend the Proms. Oh and the whole balance including micropnones etc may be different for the radio or TV broadcasts.
