RE: Chicago

Nah - most music tastes change over time. And as a teacher teaching at a lower end school to kids who hate learning I use a lot of pop music to engage students in learning English. That means a lot - a LOT - of current pop music.

It is advantageous to have relatively simple and repetitive lyrics.

I don't think anyone should be embarrassed about any music - it is someone's art - it may not be your cup of tea but if it makes people happy then that's the point in the end. From the girls who like One Direction or when I was a kid "New Kids on the Block" or the guys who loved AC/DC and Black Sabbath - or the old folks who can't get out of the 70s. Whatever. I say enjoy.

Heck in my teens if Bananarama came to town - I would have paid to see them - I have a few LPs and CDs from them. I am not embarrassed by that - It was a cruel summer - they could sing in harmony. And they are still going!

Chicago - mate I just admitted to liking Bananarama! Boob boop boop boop Love in the First Degree.... LOL

You're positively cool compared to me :)

I used this video lesson today - watch as far as you can and then imagine me conducting this lesson to 9 classes during the week. Try and get Rain on Me out of your damn head!

And I don't hate pop - imagine a teacher who hates pop, uses this lesson to teach students (because the head of department wants it taught) and then you have to feign enthusiasm to get kids interested in the language learning concept. Poor bastards. Fortunately I am okay with pop but 9 times!!!

EDIT - actually I probably watched it about 4 times myself before those 9 because I had to set-up the video: The set-up lessons on Metaphors, Connected Speech, and native English speakers dropping the final g in gerunds, etc. Then finding the actual music video - with lyrics and creating crossword puzzles.

Fortunately, they have one with Guns N' Roses and Queen- so the rocker teachers might be okay with that!
